Why join the band?

  • Music education breeds success in every other subject.

Human brains are wired for music. Students who learn music become better at language, math, and even show higher verbal IQ scores. As students learn the language of music, that process uses all types of learning: visual, auditory, and physical. The physical and mental performance skills developed by music students improve their performance in math, science, language arts, writing, and every other school subject.

  • Music supports mental health.

Music is also fantastic for relieving stress and reducing depression and anxiety, which is especially important for teens in our society today. In addition, music slows the brain’s aging process, helps with sleep, and even helps the immune system.

  • Friends who become family.

Playing music in a group teaches teamwork, ways of working together, and the joy and rewards of group accomplishment. Band members share efforts and experiences, and as such grow close friendships. Band friends are often friends for life.

  • Fun!

Band students have fun playing music together! From concerts, to parades, to meals together, outings just for fun, past students will tell you that their time in band provided some of their best high school memories.

“When I look back at my past high school years, the first thing I think of is marching band, and that’s probably how it’ll be for the rest of my life.”

Matthew Merkel, Class of 2026

“What I love most about Marching Band is the amount of time and effort spent to put together a show. It is an adventure you get to take part in each year, with all of your peers, while not only growing as a musician, but as a friend and a leader. It can be daunting to take such a big step of joining such a time-consuming program, But I believe it is totally worth doing for you will make some of your best high school memories with your time in this program.”

Anand Raju, Class of 2024

“As a First Year Guard Member, I can proudly say that joining this program was one of the best decisions I have ever made. You should join Color Guard because it combines dancing, flag work, and theater and adds instrumental music to it. It is so much fun! Like band, you learn so many valuable life skills. The Guard Directors are so amazing and would do anything for you, whether that's helping you master a toss or just an ear to listen. You become so close with the people in the Color Guard, and you will value those friendships forever. When I first joined guard, I was so worried about the time commitment, it's a lot. But you won't regret it, you get to spend pretty much every day with your best friends and make memories that will last a lifetime.”

Taylor Francis, Class of 2025

“Don't take your time in high school for granted. It will go by so much faster than you think. Find something you love to do and do it. Band and Marching Band are amazing ways to become part of something larger than yourself. By joining, you become part of a legacy that is decades old. You become part of traditions that are 100% unique to the Page Band. Instead of blowing through school, join the band and make so many memories that you will never forget. Meet people who will become your best friends. Join a program that will give you an experience unlike anything any other sport could give you. It's like the second half of our mission statement says: "The Page High School Marching Band embodies the passion of our members and staff as well as the legacy of those who come before us as we perform at the highest level, creating lifelong memories and striving for greatness in all we do, on and off the field." Be part of the greatness, of the legacy, of the memories. Be part of the band.”

Christopher Merkel, Class of 2024

Frequently Asked Questions

In each of the sections below, we aim to answer some of our most frequently asked questions from prospective students and parents.

  • Yes! We have students who are planning to enter all fields in college. The class schedule is made to allow these students to take a full schedule of classes (including A.P. and Dual Enrollment) and play in a band during all four years. Nearly all of our students are enrolled in one or more Honors/A.P./Dual Enrollment Class.

  • The first thing you should do is talk to one of our AWESOME guidance counselors at Page. They are the ones that will be helping create the student’s schedule. There is not a situation that exists that prohibits a student from taking band if that is their desire. Most of the time, because of our students’ academic drive and the rigor that comes with their class load, some classes have to be shifted.

  • All students are admitted into the band program! No matter where your skill set lies, we will work to improve your skills. There is not an audition for concert band, marching band, or jazz band.

  • Whether you are in activities or not, good grades are dependent upon being a hard worker. If you are conscientious and organized, band or any other activity will not adversely affect your grades. The bands’ schedules have been carefully developed to work with Page High School’s academic demands. In fact, many of the school’s top scholars are in band. We have had numerous students achieve perfect scores on the ACT and have had National Merit Scholarship Finalists and Semi-Finalists.

  • We believe that a well rounded music education includes marching band in the fall. The team work, discipline, time management, and camaraderie that comes with being in a competitive high school marching band is second to none. Marching band is entirely extra curricular, much like a sports team. We do not rehearse marching band music or choreography during the school day, much like the basketball team does not practice during gym class.

We hope all students who decide to participate in band at Page will be a member of the marching band. We understand there are factors that prohibit certain students from being in that group, and we will make necessary exceptions to allow students to participate in the curricular concert bands only.

  • Many of our graduates receive some sort of scholarships while they participate in college band programs. These awards vary depending upon the school and major, but even without being a music major, you can receive scholarships to participate in college bands.

  • Marching band is definitely a large time commitment, but it is very typical of any other sports team or extracurricular activity at Page. There are a couple of rehearsals and “band camp” over the summer, but once the school year starts, rehearsals and competitions will be four to five days a week. During fall of 2022, a typical week’s schedule looked like this:

    Monday - 3:30-6:00pm

    Tuesday - 3:30-6:00pm

    Thursday - 5:00-8:00pm

Friday - Football Games! The band will perform at all home games and most away games.

Saturday - Rehearsals or Competitions - The band will travel to four or five competitions over the course of a season and rehearse on various Saturdays when there is not a competition.

***Just a reminder - while this schedule is intense, marching band season ends at the end of October.

  • Band camp is simply a series of full day marching band rehearsals leading up to the beginning of the school year. The rehearsals take place at Page and are crucial for the initial progress of the marching band show. The 2023 Summer Rehearsals will be held May 30 - June 1. Band Camp will be held the weeks of July 17th and July 24th, with full day rehearsals Monday through Friday both weeks.

During the week leading up to the first day of school, the band rehearses a few afternoons and evenings to continue our growth from band camp and transition into school year rehearsals.

  • Absolutely not! We want all of our students to have a well-rounded education when they graduate from Page. We have many students in the marching band program that are involved in athletics, JROTC, school clubs, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church, and other activities. Sometimes the time commitments of these activities will overlap, but with the proper communication in advance, we will be flexible with the schedule and allow students to arrive late, leave early, or in some cases, miss rehearsals for their other commitment.

  • The marching band participates in numerous local and regional competitions during the season. Sometimes, the program will venture out to competitions or programs further away that require overnight accommodations. On longer trips, we make time for fun outings, too!

  • When a student chooses to join the marching band, the entire family gets to be part of the band family. We serve the band together and celebrate together as we watch the students work hard toward excellence.

In order to help support the band, there is a time commitment needed from families. We have a flag program that needs families to put up or take down flags on three of five flag holidays between May and November. We also serve at the Williamson County Fair, running the ticket booths throughout the week. By doing so, we gain a large donation from the fair board to put toward all of our band programs, so we ask all families to take at least two shifts during the week.

One of our largest fundraisers is running the concession stand for home football games for both Page Middle and Page High football teams, so we need parents ready to have fun making food and selling goods to game attendees. Parents will need to serve at least twice in the concession stand during the season.

In addition to the above, we need help serving food to students, chaperoning, building props, and more. All of this is done with a great group of people, and all of it benefits the kids in the band.

Now is the time. Find out more information and come join us!
